Discovering the Best Hike and Bike Trails near the Hammocks at Cane Bay

Although there are plenty of nature trails to enjoy in the Hammocks at Cane Bay, it never hurts to go off the beaten path every once in awhile. That’s why we made a list of some of the most picturesque, beautiful trails and passages the area has to offer.

 1.  Old Santee Canal Park

Construction of the Santee Canal began in 1793 after the American Revolution, and by 1800 the canal began its life as a shipping corridor for the region's crops to points beyond.

Though much of the Santee Canal is beneath Lake Moultrie, some portions are still visible where boats used to enter from the Santee River to join the headway of the Cooper River at Biggin Creek.

2. Sawmill Branch Multi-Use Trail

Starting at Gahagan Road or the parking area on Ashley Drive, you can walk or ride this flat, 10-foot wide, paved trail, which follows the Sawmill Branch Canal and through a wooded area in the southern part of the city.

Most of the road crossings on this trail go under the roads, making for a pleasant ride or walk. Watch for wildlife along this wooded trail which can occupy the canal.

3. Swamp Fox Passage

The Swamp Fox Trail is one of South Carolina Lowcountry's oldest trails. The total length of the trail is 42 miles, but only the eastern 27 miles are designated as a National Recreation Trail.

When General Francis Marion sought refuge from British troops in the state's Lowcountry swamps, he earned the nickname "Swamp Fox." His guerilla tactics and legendary reputation eventually led Boy Scout leaders to name this trail after Marion when it was originally built in 1968.
