What to Know About the Dorchester School District for the 2016-2017 School Year

Crescent Homes Shares the Back to School Information You Need for the Dorchester School District II 2016-2017 School Year

Families living in North Charleston, SC new homes in Indigo Palms have the opportunity to send their students to a number of top schools in the award-winning Dorchester School District II. The school district’s mission is: “To be recognized as a “World Class” school district, expecting each student to achieve at his/her optimum level in all areas, and providing all members of the district family with an environment that permits them to do their personal best.”  

Dorchester II is one of the fastest growing districts in the state with enrollment approaching 24,000 students across 20 schools, including twelve elementary schools, six middle schools, and three high schools. Historically, the schools have performed well above the state average. To help you plan for the 2016-2017 school year, Crescent Homes has shared some of the important information families living in or moving to Indigo Palms should know.
 
Neighborhood Schools– Students living in Indigo Palms can attend Windsor Hill Elementary School Infused with the Arts, River Oaks Middle School, Fort Dorchester High School or alternatively Eagles Nest Elementary School and Academic Magnet High School for the Arts.

2016 – 2017 School Year– The school calendar year begins on August 15, 2016 and ends on May 26, 2017. High School graduations will take place on May 27, 2017.

The School Day – The bell schedules for each school will be:

  • Elementary Schools: 7:15 a.m. - 2:15 p.m.
  • Middle Schools: 8:10 a.m. - 3:10 p.m.
  • High Schools: 8:55 a.m. - 3:55 p.m.

School Holidays and Breaks – Students will have a total of 23 holidays during the calendar year, which is included in the Thanksgiving Holiday and Spring breaks.

School Grading System - Dorchester School District II adopted the 10-point grading scale for Grades 3 – 12 beginning with the 2016-2017 year. The new grading scale gives South Carolina students a fair opportunity to apply and compete for college admissions. The 10-point scale is as follows: A 90-100; B 80-89; C 70-79; D 60-69 and F Below 60.

School Attendance Policy - Students are expected to be in attendance 180 days each year. Denial of credit for high school or promotion for elementary and middle school students shall be uniformly denied at the 11th unexcused absence.
