Indigo Palms: History of North Charleston, SC

The City North of Charleston

As the third largest city in South Carolina, North Charleston encompasses parts of Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. It is the home to many large companies and industries. More and more companies are looking at North Charleston as a viable option for their headquarters due to the lower taxes, cost of living and qualified employment pools from which they can draw.

Like most areas in South Carolina, plantations were the first developments on the land. South Carolina has a rich history of plantations, especially in the Lowcountry where landowners and workers created a life out of the ground. Wealth was gained and the city and surrounding towns began to grow. Time passed and the huge plantations were divided into smaller, family farms and other industries began to take shape. There are still remnants of these beautiful homes and land that is still worked for crops each season.

The first major industry of North Charleston was lumber and now it has evolved to military, aviation, industrial hubs, technology and more. Because it is located near the Atlantic Ocean, North Charleston has the advantage of receiving shipments to aid companies in importing and exporting.

Exponential Growth

Like all cities, North Charleston has had its fair share of growing pains but as more communities are created like Indigo Palms, residents are moving to the area on a permanent basis. These neighborhoods are close to their employers and the schools and infrastructure of this area is strong. As crime rates continue to decrease and employment rates skyrocket in North Charleston, it is quickly becoming the affordable city for homeowners in the Lowcountry. As it has undergone a rejuvenation and revamping, North Charleston is focused on growth and becoming an exemplary city once again. North Charleston is home to Tanger Outlet Malls, the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center as well as the Charleston International Airport and several higher education facilities. It has reinvented itself in a way that is attracting residents to buy beautiful homes and settle.
