Charleston's nickname is "The Holy City" due to the overwhelming number of historic churches that frame the skyline. Cathedral of Praise

Cathedral of Praise is a large, nondenominational church in North Charleston. The facility has a variety of worship services on the weekend and plenty of activities for church members throughout the week. It is also home to Cathedral Academy, a private Christian school. The facility has free childcare available during the worship ceremonies.

St George's Episcopal Church

St George's is an Episcopal church, but many of its members come from other Christian denominations, including Roman Catholics, Baptists, and Methodists. The church offers four different sermons on Sunday from traditional rites to contemporary worship ceremonies with music. There is even a family service that lasts 30 minutes and is made for families with children who want to get involved with the church. St. George also offers men, women, and youth groups.

Riverbluff Church

Riverbluff Church is a contemporary Southern Baptist Church. The church began as Midlands Baptist Church in the 1940s, but during the 1990s changed its worship methods to prefer a contemporary style over the traditional one. The church moved to its new site in 2002, and this expansive building is ready to welcome worshipers new and old alike. There are two services held on Sunday morning. Childcare is available for parents with small children during the worship service. The church also has several small group organizations to help get members involved in the community to include Bible study groups, men groups, youth groups, women groups, and even a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group.

First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church in downtown Charleston is the home of the oldest Baptist church in the South. The current church building dates back to the 1820s, but the original church began in 1688. This historic house of worship lies in the Battery neighborhood and is a popular destination for tourists as well as worshipers. The church offers three different worship ceremonies on Sundays along with a Bible class in the morning. It is also a popular place for local weddings.

Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE)

Temple Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE) is both the birthplace of American Reform Judaism and home to a large congregation of Reform Jews. The American Reform movement started within this Charleston temple in 1824. It is the oldest Jewish temple in continuous use in America. The original building built in 1794 collapsed from a fire, and the replacement temple completed during the 1830s is one of the best examples of Greek revival architecture in the country. The temple still operates as a house of worship with ceremonies on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Visitors can also tour the building throughout the week, and it is a popular spot for many Jewish tourists.

St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church

Officially known as St. Mary's of the Annunciation, but called St. Mary's by locals, this is the oldest Catholic Church in South Carolina. The original church was built in 1789 on the same exact spot. A fire destroyed the church in 1838, and the building currently serving as seat of the Catholic Church in Charleston was built in 1839. St. Mary's oversees the dioceses of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The church offers worships a Holy Mass service every day at 7am from Monday to Friday, and a special Mass on Sundays at 9:30 am. The church is proud of its history and has a record of all of serving pastors going back to the 18th century.
