Colonial Dorchester
Colonial Dorchester State Park is all that remains of the town of Dorchester. Founded in 1697, Dorchester thrived as a small town along the banks of the Ashley River and its residents traded downriver with colonial Charleston. During the Revolutionary War, however, the residents abandoned the town for the comparative safety of Charleston and never returned. Time ravaged most of the structures in Dorchester but left behind the strongest buildings and today visitors can walk along streets over 300 years old and admire the remains of St. George's Anglican Church and the Dorchester Fort.

Magnolia Plantation
Founded in 1676 by the Drayton Family, the Magnolia Plantation has seen centuries of history. It was a house even before the United States became its own country. Centered among the expansive grounds is the looming main house, the third one built on the spot. The core of the home dates back to before the Revolutionary War, but each successive generation expanded the home and made it their own. Visitors can take a thirty minute tour through the home and catch a glimpse of what life was like before the Civil War. The other main attractions on the property are the magnificent gardens that wind through the river bottom. It is a romantic place for a couple to spend the afternoon, strolling through magnolias and azaleas. Those with children, or those still young at heart, can check out the Magnolia Plantation Zoo.

Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum
At the mouth of the Cooper River right on historic Charleston Harbor, residents can find the Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum. It should not be hard to miss since the "USS Yorktown" a massive aircraft carrier, looms above the harbor. Also, at the museum are two other US Navy ships, the "USS Laffey" a destroyer, and the "USS Clamagore" a submarine. The museum is popular with guests of all ages, from retired veterans to young children. There are several fun ways to spend hours at the museum. A favorite with locals are the overnight camping excursions, and many a boy scout who grew up in Charleston can recall spending a night on board the "USS Yorktown." Yet Patriot's Point is more than just a Navy museum, it also houses marine exhibits and is a popular destination for local school field trips. It is a museum that celebrates both the Navy and the sea.

Charleston City Market
Long ago, Americans who lived in cities went shopping at their local city market. Most of these markets were lost long ago to modern development, but Charleston preserved its historic City Market for the future. Visitors can walk down the cobblestone streets, listen to women speaking in Gullah, a dialect native to Charleston, and watch weavers create baskets out of Sweetgrass. The market first opened in 1807. Today, it spans four blocks of open-air buildings full of vendors selling Lowcountry souvenirs and local delights. Both visitors and residents alike come to the City Market on a regular basis. In fact, the destination is so popular "Travel and Leisure" magazine gave it their coveted "World's Best" award in 2013.

Charleston Old and Historic District
The historic Charleston City Market lies within the Charleston Old and Historic District. This area comprises much of the downtown district, including famous streets such as the Battery. Here, former naval officers built their homes facing the sea, and these magnificent structures remain intact to this day. The entire Historic District has over 81 different historic properties. Some of these homes are open to the public, but even just a short afternoon stroll down one or two of the streets in the Historic District is like taking a journey back in time.
