Indigo Palms: Places to Eat Brunch

Places to Eat Brunch

At the end of a long week, there is no better way to relax and unwind than with some French toast and a mimosa at a local café or restaurant. Brunch has become an American pastime, as it allows weary weekenders to sleep a couple of extra hours without missing out on a sumptuous breakfast and lunch. Living in North Charleston means being just minutes from a variety of brunch eateries. Whether you enjoy rowdy pubs, elite high-end cuisine or a flavorful omelet in a traditional and quiet café, there is something for everyone in Charleston. The following are three of the most popular (and talked about) brunch destinations in the vicinity.

Madra Rua Irish Pub

Pubs may not be the first place people think of when deciding on a place for brunch, but Madra Rua Irish Pub in North Charleston was created to break the rules. There is no better place in the area to catch the pregame commentary while enjoying award winning traditional Irish fare. Every Sunday, Madra Rua presents its Jazz Brunch from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Menu options include dishes like biscuits with sausage gravy, shrimp and grits, streak and eggs, French toast and an andouille sausage and cheese omelet. Selections are topped off with $3 bloody Marys and mimosas, or you can opt for the signature bloody jerry, which is a traditional bloody Mary with a shot of Guinness. Non-alcoholic beverages like coffee and hot Irish tea are also available.

High Cotton

Maverick Kitchens operates multiple restaurants throughout the Charleston area. Though several of the eateries are popular among locals, High Cotton is a go-to for a decadent Sunday brunch. Every week, patrons are served traditional Lowcountry cuisine to the tune of live jazz from local musicians. Although the brunch menu is subject to change from week to week, some favorites include corned beef hash, sweet corn Johnny cakes and a southern breakfast cassoulet, which is a sweet and spicy combination of shredded duck and smoked pork belly served alongside two eggs, sunny side up. Try these combined with a citrus-filled mimosa or a signature Colonial Collins cocktail from the bar. High Cotton’s upscale brunch dining experience has been recognized as a Charleston favorite by Martha Stewart Weddings. Reservations are recommended and available online or by calling the restaurant directly.

Sunflower Café

For a family-friendly brunch and an affordable menu, the locally-owned Sunflower Café is a good pick for a filling meal. The restaurant has received rave reviews from the Charleston City Paper with special recommendations for the filet mignon and Boursin cheese omelet. Everything on the brunch menu is under $10, including sandwiches, salads and delicious sweet pecan waffles served with a warm banana syrup. To satisfy a sweet tooth, top off your meal with a hot chocolate fudge filled cake coated with powdered sugar. Located on Ashley River Road, Sunflower Café is a great gathering place on the way to a day of shopping at Citadel Mall or before spending an afternoon exploring the historic Magnolia Plantation. Sunday brunch starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and the restaurant is also open for both lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday.
