Discovering Hutchinson Square Master Plan in Summerville, SC

Discover the Beautiful Hutchinson Square in Summerville, SC Near New Homes at The Coves at The Lakes of Cane Bay

Centered in the heart of downtown Summerville, the historic Hutchinson Square, named after one of the city’s founders and first mayor, Edward Hutchinson, has long been a favorite gathering place for picnics and events for residents of Summerville, SC. To uphold and preserve that tradition, the city initiated a master plan improvement project to restore and expand on the park’s use as a signature amenity in downtown Summerville. The proposed plan offers a five phased approach to enhancing the beauty and utility of the city park.

The first phase of the renovation took place this summer and was focused on utility improvements, including electrical and irrigation services, a new sidewalk in front of the businesses along Little Main and new street lighting. The park also received a new large live oak tree that replaced a magnolia tree to give the square a more symmetrical look with four large oaks along both South Main and Little Main.

Future phases of the proposed plan would incorporate additional improvements to the park and the surrounding streets, including:

  • Adding a signature gateway entry feature to the park that will be modeled after the historic entrance that once welcomed visitors to Summerville and will also create an open pavilion for event space at the entrance to the park.
  • Enhancing the landscaping and hardscaping of the park. Preservation of the grand live oaks is a primary goal of the restoration as well as adding a series of native landscape beds and understory trees to provide safety and create an open lawn center in the park that will be a multi-use space. Plant material used will be native to the area. The plan also incorporates a Grand Lawn area under the oaks facing the signature gateway and open air pavilion at the corner of Doty Avenue and Main Street. The Grand Lawn will be used for additional multi-use space for outdoor events.
  • Preserving and enhancing the historic central sidewalk to the park to improve circulation and make destinations around the square easily accessible as well as create interior paths that guide downtown Summerville patrons to one of the two plazas that anchor both ends of the park.
  • The planning of parking improvements, which will create angled parking along Little Main Street to provide 59 spaces and 10 more new spaces along Doty Avenue.
