Waterloo Estates: Equestrian lovers guide to Johns Island

John’s Island, SC has miles of pristine forests and fields that are in the perfect condition for horses. Because of this, there are several area barns and facilities that specialize in keeping these guys happy and healthy.

With that said, here’s our equestrian-lover’s guide to the best and most well-equipped places to experience horse handling at its finest.

Eden Wind Farm

Boasting prize-winning horses and plenty of acreage to get to know them better, Eden Wind Farm is an American Quarter Horse Association-certified, or AQHA, breeder and expert trainer of both sires and dams. Aside from breeding services, they also offer trail riding, horseback riding lessons and horses for lease.

Stono River Riding Academy

The Stono River Riding Academy, formerly the Stono River Stable, was originally established in 1969 and offers horseback tours through the John’s Island backcountry. They also feature a co-op stable where you can house your favorite four-legged friend for $150 a month.

Grass Is Greener Riding School, LLC

Founded by an alumna from the College of Charleston, ShaylaCataldo runs GGRS as a boarding, showing and training facility. Offering riding lessons for people as young as six, GGRS is a family friendly way to learn more about horses while discovering wild and uncharted areas of John’s Island.

Storybrook Farm, Inc.

Most famously known for their “Hope of Horseback” program, which uses local horses to help young adults and children suffering from mental and physical disabilities, Storybrook Farm has always prided itself on establishing life-long bonds between horse and rider.

Full Circle Farm

A 35-acre farm that specializes in hunter/jumper horse training, Full Circle also comes equipped with grooming stalls and wash racks for proper care and maintenance. Volunteers are always welcomed and encouraged to help out during the busy season.

There’s plenty of space for the equine-inclined to roam near Waterloo Estates, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t saddle up and see what John’s Island has to offer via horseback.
