The park is home to the longest ADA trail system in South Carolina and visitors can take several different paths to explore different areas of the island. The Spanish Mount Trail takes guests to the Scott Creek wetland area where they can visit the second oldest Native American site in South Carolina. Called Spanish Mount because of the enormous pile of shells left behind the original inhabitants; this archeological area dates centuries past. Other trails wind through the maritime forest area behind the beach where visitors can wander underneath live oak trees hanging with Spanish moss.

West Ashley Greenway and West Ashley Bikeway
Two separate trails through North Charleston's neighboring West Ashley neighborhood. Although the trails are close to one another, they do not connect. The West Ashley Bikeway runs for four miles along a paved trail and while the trail winds through the residential area of town, once it enters the wooded section it becomes completely straight. Runners, riders, and walkers are able to take in local nature sights, including the nearby river and marsh. The West Ashley Greenway is longer than the Bikeway and stretches for over ten miles. It connects to the East Coast Greenway, part of an ambitious trail project that will eventually span over 2,600 miles. The unpaved trail runs through residential sections and ends close to the marshes.

Hampton Plantation State Park
Located inside the Francis Manion National Forest, Hampton Plantation State Park is a historic site featuring an authentic colonial-era Georgian mansion. The house dominates the surrounding landscape and guests can take part in interpretative tours through this former rice plantation. There is a two mile trail that runs along behind the house through an abandoned rice field. The trail area was part of the farmland in days long ago, now it is home to local wildlife that roams the formerly cultivated fields. Visitors might get lucky and catch a glimpse of a White-Tailed Deer in a meadow or an American Alligator lurking in the shallows of Wambaw Creek. There are other activities available at the park besides the walking trail. Guests can fish in Wambaw Creek or take a paddling tour through Nature Adventures Outfitters. Bird-watching is also popular at the park since it is home to the endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker.
