Baker Plantations: Colleges in Charleston to Make Commuting Easy for any Resident

Let’s be honest, not every college student jumps at the idea of sharing a shoebox-sized dorm room with complete strangers. That doesn’t mean commuting has to be a drag either. So, to help with that, here are five colleges that are close to the North Charleston, SC area:


The Citadel

Formally known as “The Military College of the South”, The Citadel is a public institution that has an enrollment of roughly 3,500 students, and an acceptance rate of about 81 percent. Founded in 1842, some of its most notable alumni include: novelist Pat Conroy, U.S Senator Fritz Hollings, and Andre Roberts, a receiver for the Washington Redskins.


College of Charleston

Accredited as the 13th oldest institution in the United States, and the oldest municipal college, the College of Charleston is truly a sight to behold. It’s campus is home to about 11,000 undergraduates and has served as the backdrop for countless television shows, movies and books.


Charleston Southern University

Originally founded in 1964, as Baptist College, Charleston Southern University, or CSU, is a private institution with nearly 3,300 students. With about 300 acres of land, the university has several sports teams and intramural clubs, and a faith-based education system that’s comparable to some of the best private colleges in the region.


Trident Technical College

Consisting of two campus: the main campus in North Charleston, and the Palmer campus in downtown Charleston, Trident Technical College offers two-year programs in everything from child development and judicial services to Visual Arts and more. It also has a rather notable culinary program located at the Palmer campus.


Medical University of Charleston

The premier medical research school in the the Lowcountry, MUSC was established in 1824 as a public institution. Presently, there are colleges for:

  • Medicine
  • Pharmacy
  • Nursing
  • Graduate Studies
  • Dental Medicine
  • Health Professions

It holds the distinction of being the oldest, continually operating schools of medicine in the country, as well as being the oldest in the Deep South.
