Due to its size, Summerville occupies all three counties of the tri-county area, Dorchester, Berkeley and Charleston.

The Flowertown Festival, a yearly arts and crafts festival held in April, is the largest festival of its kind in South Carolina.

Summerville has long been known as the very birthplace of sweet tea. This was commemorated in 2015 when the town mixed the largest vat of the sweet stuff ever, with over 144,000 gallons brewed in one day.

John McKissick, long-time coach of the Summerville Green Wave football team, is heralded as the winningest coach in American football history with over 600 total wins.

After being founded in 1847, the town passed an unprecedented ordinance making it illegal to cut down trees of a particular size. The fine was $25.

The very first settlers to the area moved here from Charleston to escape disease and virulent insects.

7. Summerville has berthed several professional athletes, including A.J. Green, 3-time Pro Bowler and Cincinnati Bengal, and Brett Gardner, a current New York Yankee.

8. In a span of just four decades, Summerville’s population has increased from 3,000 to nearly 50,000.

9. In 1900, because of the high concentration of pine trees in the area, Summerville was listed as one of the two best areas in the world for the treatment of certain lung diseases.

10. There are currently five locations in the town that are part of the National Register of Historic Places, including Middleton Place and the Summerville Historic District.
