Azalea Park

This Main Street Park in the heart of Summerville is the town’s pride and joy. It was originally built in the 1930s, thanks to the efforts of the Women’s Civic League (later to become the Garden Club of Summerville). Thanks to a grant from the Works Progress Administration the city was able to pay workers ten cents an hour to clear away the existing bramble. A noted Summerville azalea grower then donated over 30,000 plants for the park.

Over the years the park became a little neglected. It was first renovated in the 1960s. In 1975 it was renovated again in preparation for the nation’s bicentennial and in the 1980s ponds, a bridge and the gazebos were added. Today this 12 acre paradise features a bronze sculpture collection, reflection ponds, gazebos, and walking paths. Visitors can enjoy the butterfly garden. There is an amphitheater and a community center named in honor of the late Grange S. Cuthbert, the former Summerville mayor who orchestrated the park’s original construction. There are also tennis courts.

The bronze sculptures are playful and dedicated to childhood pleasures. “Follow the Leader” depicts children following each other while balancing on a brick walk. Real children love to climb on it too and this activity is welcome. The sculpture was designed with space for real children behind each bronze “child.” Another stature depicts a child deeply engrossed in reading a book while sitting casually on a wall. A statue of a sitting dog dubbed “Toby” has an interesting legend behind it. People love to pet the statue because it looks so real. According to legend the dog statue always feels warm, because secretly the spirit of a real dog is inside waiting to come out and play. On the first day of spring the statue feels cold to the touch because for that one day the spirit of the dog gets to come out and play in the park. This story was put into writing by fourth grader, Blaise Rashitchian in 2002.
